How Journaling as a Creative Will Change Your Life and Career
Journaling is such a simple yet powerful tool that can help declutter our minds and improve our mental health in the creative industry. As creatives, we are constantly bombarded with new ideas, thoughts, and tasks, which can lead to feelings of stress and burnout. One way to combat this is through journaling! And taking this habit will literally change your life for good!
Watch the video above to learn everything about it and to see how I personally journal. I also show you the ones I use on a daily basis. They’re particularly focused on mindfulness and creative people like you and me.
WHAT IS JOURNALING?
Journaling is the act of regularly writing down our thoughts and feelings on paper. That’s it!
I like to describe journaling as a way of getting to be your own therapist. By writing down your daily feelings, and emotions, you’ll be able to spot patterns in your mood, or even find solutions to many of the questions you may have in your head. These can be personal or about your career, and goals.
But how can journaling specifically benefit those in the creative industry?
First and foremost, journaling allows us to free up mental space by getting all of our ideas and tasks out of our heads and onto paper. By physically writing down our thoughts, we are able to let go of them and not constantly have them buzzing around in our minds. This can help us feel more focused and clear-headed, and allow us to better prioritize and manage our workload.
Journaling can also be a great way to brainstorm and generate new ideas.
By regularly writing down our thoughts and observations, we can make connections and come up with creative solutions that we might not have otherwise thought of.
Additionally, journaling can help improve our mental health by providing a safe and private space to process our emotions.
In the creative industry, it can be easy to feel pressure to always be "on" and produce, but this can lead to feelings of inadequacy and burnout. Journaling can allow us to process and release these negative emotions, as well as help us identify any unhealthy thought patterns and behaviours.
You’ll also be able to organise your days by priorities and track your daily steps towards your goals. This is a must if you want to achieve them as you’ll be analysing step by step everything you’re doing, and you’ll be able to spot any mistakes or things you may have to change.
So, how can you get started with journaling?
First, find a journal and a pen that you enjoy using.
I have this stunning journal from Intelligent Change and I’ve been writing in it every single morning on a daily basis for a couple of years already.
They have so many journals and notebooks to choose from but this one is the one that works best for me. You may like others more. Just find one you love so you can stick to the habit more easily!
WHEN IS BETTER TO journal?
The mornings are the best time of the day. Our minds are more clear. I personally love waking up very early because everything is extremely quiet and I love that when I journal.
You can write first thing in the morning about how you feel, about your morning routine, you can write down your three main actions for the day, and think about your gratitude list. Which is something we don’t do enough.
For example, in my case, I need to cherish my career achievements more often. I can get way too busy and carried away by ambition without celebrating all my current achievements. I think every creative out there goes through this at some point… Writing down everything I’ve already achieved, helps me feel way better about myself and my career.
You can write anything you want and feel. It’ll make you feel better and start the day with positivity!
Alternatively, you can also journal at the end of your day as you’ll be able to write about everything you’ve done, feel and encountered. This way you can build some self-awareness about the things you had to do and you didn’t or the things you did that weren’t a priority.
Even better if you journal at both times of the day!
This journal particularly is extremely good if you’re a beginner. Why? Because it has many prompts. This way you’ll never feel stuck when you don’t know what to write about.
FOR HOW LONG SHOULD YOU journal?
It doesn't have to be a long time! Even just 10-15 minutes can be beneficial.
First, get into the habit. And then you’ll see how long is needed for you to write down your thoughts, actions and emotions.
There's no right or wrong way to journal, so let your thoughts and feelings flow freely. You can write about your day, your goals, your challenges, or anything else that's on your mind. It's important to remember that journaling is a personal and private process, so don't worry about grammar or structure. The most important thing is to let go of any self-judgment and allow yourself to be honest and vulnerable.
IN SUMMARY
Journaling is a simple yet powerful tool that can help declutter our minds and improve our mental health in the creative industry. By regularly writing down our thoughts and feelings, we can free up mental space, brainstorm and generate new ideas, and process and release negative emotions. So why not give it a try and see how it can benefit you?
