Embracing Change: How I Switched from Canon to Sony as a Professional Photographer after 14 Years

As a professional photographer, the choice of gear is one of the most significant decisions we make in our creative journey. For 14 years, I had been in love with Canon. Relying on their cameras and lenses to capture countless moments and to chase my dreams as a professional photographer in London since I left my country (Spain) over 10 years ago. However, as my creative career evolved to being also a content creator, I found myself yearning for certain features and capabilities that Canon didn't offer. So after much contemplation, I made the difficult decision to switch from Canon to Sony. In this blog post, I'll share my experience and the factors that led me to embrace this change and opt for Sony. If you want to see my new Sony gear and how I made the switch, you can watch the video above.

MY Evolving Needs AS A Content Creator

Since I started my YouTube Channel, my Canon 5D MKIV started to be very limiting. I’m in love with that camera as a photographer but it was exactly that, just a photography camera. I found myself recording some videos with it but it made the whole process very difficult because of the lack of flipping screen to frame myself, its weight, and its size. Its 4K capabilities were also very limited as there was a massive crop factor.

I found myself needing a camera to produce my videos, to record behind-the-scenes of my photoshoots and to record handheld vlogs easily. A camera that would be able to record 4K without a crop and 60fps (even if this would be in 1080p). I wanted to level up my video game and learn more about filmmaking. This way I could deliver better-quality videos and be more creative.

It was then that I broke the ice with Sony by getting the Sony A7C. I tried hard to find a full-frame Canon camera with the same specs but there was none within my budget by that time. The most similar was the Canon EOS R. However, this camera had a big crop at 4K that the Sony A7C didn’t have. And I would have had to buy the Canon RF adapter for my EF lenses as well.

So, there I was, with two camera systems. One for photography and another one for video…

This started to be very annoying pretty soon. I LOVE my Canon 5D MKIV and I didn’t want to switch. However, I had to be honest with myself and accept the fact that getting a hybrid camera with the best capabilities for photography and for video, would make my life as a professional photographer and content creator way easier.

I’m going to travel alone quite often. And I wanted to have a main camera that could offer me the best of both worlds when I don’t want to carry a second camera with me. A camera I could use to capture the world around me at its best while documenting it all in the form of video for my YouTube Channel and social media platforms.

So after a lot of consideration and thinking very carefully about my new needs in my creative career, I decided to get the Sony A7RV.

Why didn’t I get the Canon EOS R5?

The answer is simple: I already invested in the Sony A7C and I wanted a unique camera system without having to carry lenses for both Canon and Sony during my travels.

I also found that the Sony A7RV has many more features. Resulting in more versatility for my creative work.
